Pillar 4

Recovery and attention

Sobriety, compulsion, screens and chatbots.

Attention is the thing every app wants, and the thing practice trains. This pillar covers the places where the two meet: sobriety, compulsive checking, endless feeds, and chatbots that are always ready to talk.

I write from my own experience and from reading, and I keep the claims modest. Meditation isn't a treatment for addiction or for anything else. This is about practice, not treatment. If you're struggling, your GP or a local recovery service is the right place to start. The NHS lists addiction support services, and Recovery Dharma runs free peer-led meetings built on Buddhist practice.
