Pillar 3
The seen only the seen: the suttas, made practical
The suttas and the philosophy around them, read slowly and put to use.
The name of this site comes from a short teaching in the Udāna, given to Bāhiya of the Bark Cloth in a street in Sāvatthī. This pillar is where I read the early Buddhist texts slowly, one passage at a time, and ask what each one asks of a practitioner now.
I quote from published translations and link to them, usually Bhikkhu Sujato's on SuttaCentral, so you can read the whole text yourself. Where translators disagree, I say so. I read these texts as a practitioner. I'm not a scholar of Pāli, and I won't pretend to be.
The first reading is the Bahiya Sutta, Udāna 1.10, with Bhikkhu Sujato's translation. More readings will follow, each listed here with its reference number and the translation used. The newsletter will say when the next one is up.
